There is
little or no difference between classical vocal and
instrumental music, except in the mode of expression. The
basic principles, grammar and scalar foundations are
identical in both varieties. However in instrumental
classical music there are different baaj or styles of
playing, much the same as in vocal classical music, there
are different gharanas or schools which have their own
characteristic styles of presentation and interpretation of
a raga.
No instrument can, however, match the human voice, the most
versatile instrument devised by nature. It is said that of
all instruments, the sarangi alone comes close to the human
voice. Although there are a large number of instruments
employed for playing classical music, the present selection
of classical instrumental music confines itself to the
sitar, the sarangi, the tabla and the
sarod.
Also included are popular instruments such as the alghoza,
the ek-tara and the clarinet that have been
put to amazing use by folk music maestros who remain
unexcelled in their art. |
